There's No Place Like Home

We've been on the road for over a week - and I can't tell you how glad I am to be home and back together as a family (the kids and I were without daddy for 4 nights while he worked.) This little break has taught me a few things about traveling with kids, family and home.

First, that when one parent has a little time at home to themselves they can accomplish A LOT. I gave Jonny a list that included electrical work, car stuff and household repairs. He got all the big major stuff accomplished on day one. It is amazing what one person can do when the rest of the house is gone. I really was impressed.

Second, it's not easy having to stay with kids in someone else's house for more than a night or two. I love getting to visit with friends and family and it's great to save money by staying in someone's guest room. But it can be super stressful to try and get your kids to not touch things they aren't suppose to. Or try getting a 2-year-old boy to whisper at 6 a.m. Just not easy. I spent a lot of time being stressed on how much me and the kids were bothering people which takes away from the fun.

Third, playgrounds are a god send. And luckily, they are everywhere. We had a few within walking distance of the house we were staying and it was such an easy way to get the kids out of the house for an hour or so. Plus, they burn off energy which helps at bedtime / nap time. And on long car rides when the kids are getting restless and everyone needs a break - playgrounds are again, a perfect spot.

Fourth, while kids have fun and traveling is a great learning experience - they also really like to just stay home. After a week on the road, when my husband asked the kids what they wanted to do this morning - "drop mommy off at work and go to the zoo or fairytale town, etc." or "just stay home and walk to the park" - staying home won.

I think my travel bug has been cured - at least for a few weeks. Time to get back on the routine. Gus starts preschool soon - and Fall is almost here.

Anyone else looking forward to the routine that back-to-school and fall brings?

P.S. if you're looking to get your kids more into the routine - check out my morning and evening checklists that I made for Lucille.
