Thoughts of simpler lifestyle

I'm going to start by saying I'm guilty of it. I'm guilty of complicating things with new toys for the kids, new decor for the house, keeping schedules too packed. But something has been on my mind of late. The desire to really live more simply and a slower lifestyle.

It isn't an easy thing to do - because there is SO much I want to do in my life and with my kids. But time seems to go so fast -- and the littles are getting bigger so quickly. So I want to simplify and slow it down and enjoy the time.

Here are the changes I am hoping to make in our lives to simplify and slow down. Nothing here is earth shattering. But I figure if I write it down and someone reads it - it holds me to a higher standard.

Turn off the TV - Sometime I use the TV to distract the kids while I just get stuff done. And while it is nice to be able to get things done without interruption, I would rather they work on some creative play. So we've been turning the TV off a little more... which means that cooking, laundry or cleaning takes a little longer with two helpers... but we are spending more time together which is what its about.

Be present during the down time - I'm good at being present when needed or at the bigger moments - but sometimes I get distracted when the kids are self-entertaining. I think these are lost moments for me. So much can happen when you aren't paying attention. You can miss seeing small changes in your kids and you can also miss signs of emotion. I'm going to work on this.

Downsize - I'm working on this. We have so. Much. Stuff. Toys, books, things. Some of these things make us happy or bring us memories of beautiful places or times - but some just fill space. I'll keep saying empty space is ok and I can get rid of things that don't bring us happiness or memories. I just have to get the rest of the family on board.

Practice saying "No." - This one is going to be hard for me. I like to do anything and everything and help people how ever I can. But I'm making a mental effort to acknowledge that my time is important and I should spend it how I want.

Fill your life with people you love - I think I already do this - but if I am really going to start saying "no" more... this is going to be extra important. Because the times you say "yes" you want to be with people you love, who support you and lift you into a good and positive place. I'm lucky that this applies to most of the people I know.

I will still be trying to document it all. The everyday moments are fun and emotional to reflect on. What do you do when you need to simplify life or slow down? I'd love advice!
